  • any hosted Local Heroes sub-sites or school archive sites
  • any associated applications, portals or digital services operated by Local Heroes

By accessing or using the platform, you agree to these Terms.

If you do not agree, you should stop using the platform immediately

1. About Us

Local Heroes is an educational and heritage programme delivered by Legasee Educational Trust (registered charity no. 1145354).

The platform is designed to support schools, educators, students and communities in creating and sharing oral history and heritage content.

References to “we”, “us” or “our” refer to Local Heroes and Legasee Educational Trust.

References to “you” refer to users, schools, organisations, contributors and visitors using the platform.

2. Platform Services

The Local Heroes platform may include:

  • public archive websites
  • school or organisation sub-sites
  • support portals
  • account systems
  • media upload systems
  • digital archives
  • educational resources
  • communication tools
  • analytics and reporting tools
  • AI-assisted features or search tools

Some services require account access.

We may change, suspend, improve or discontinue any feature at any time.

3. Educational Use

Local Heroes is intended primarily for educational, heritage and community use.

Schools and organisations using the platform are responsible for ensuring their use complies with:

  • safeguarding obligations
  • copyright law
  • UK GDPR and data protection law
  • school policies
  • media consent requirements
  • accessibility responsibilities where applicable

4. Accounts & Access

If you create an account, you agree to:

  • provide accurate information
  • keep login credentials secure
  • not share accounts inappropriately
  • notify us if you believe your account has been compromised

We may suspend or terminate access where:

  • these Terms are breached
  • content is unlawful or harmful
  • platform security is at risk
  • accounts are inactive for extended periods
  • abusive behaviour occurs

We do not guarantee uninterrupted platform availability.

5. Users Under 18

Schools and responsible adults must ensure:

  • appropriate supervision is in place
  • necessary permissions and consents are obtained
  • student participation is appropriately managed
  • safeguarding procedures are followed

Children under 13 should not independently create platform accounts without supervision and permission from an appropriate adult or organisation.

6. User-Generated Content

Users, schools and organisations may upload:

  • written content
  • photographs
  • audio recordings
  • interview footage
  • educational resources
  • archive material
  • documents and media

You remain responsible for content you upload.

By uploading content, you confirm that:

  • you have the right to upload and share it
  • appropriate permissions and consents have been obtained
  • the content does not infringe copyright or privacy rights
  • the content is not unlawful, harmful, defamatory or abusive

You grant Local Heroes a non-exclusive licence to:

  • host
  • display
  • archive
  • reproduce
  • back up
  • process
  • adapt for technical compatibility
  • promote educational aspects of the programme

solely in connection with operating and promoting the Local Heroes programme.

This licence does not transfer ownership of your content.

7. Moderation & Removal

We reserve the right to:

  • review uploaded content
  • remove content
  • restrict access
  • suspend accounts
  • disable sub-sites

where we reasonably believe content:

  • breaches these Terms
  • creates safeguarding concerns
  • infringes rights
  • poses security or reputational risks
  • may be unlawful or inappropriate

We are not responsible for verifying the factual accuracy of all uploaded content.

8. Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise stated:

  • the platform design
  • branding
  • software
  • systems
  • documentation
  • educational framework
  • support materials

remain the property of Local Heroes or its licensors.

You may not:

  • copy platform systems
  • reproduce branding
  • commercially exploit platform materials
  • reverse engineer software
  • redistribute platform assets

without written permission.

9. Third-Party Services

The platform may integrate with third-party services including:

  • hosting providers
  • video services
  • analytics providers
  • AI tools
  • cloud storage systems
  • embedded media services

We are not responsible for third-party services, content or availability.

Your use of those services may also be subject to their own terms and policies.

10. AI-Assisted Features

Some platform features may use AI-assisted technologies including:

  • moderation support
    summaries
  • tagging
  • support tooling

AI-generated outputs may not always be accurate and should not be relied upon without appropriate human review.

11. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • attempt unauthorised access
  • interfere with platform operation
  • upload malware or malicious code
  • misuse archive systems
  • harass or abuse staff or users
  • attempt to scrape or copy platform data at scale

We may investigate misuse and cooperate with legal authorities where required.

12. Availability & Backups

We aim to provide a reliable platform, however:

  • we do not guarantee uninterrupted availability
  • features may change over time
  • maintenance may occasionally affect access
  • archived content may be migrated or reorganised

We may maintain backups for operational and disaster recovery purposes.

13. Limitation of Liability

The platform is provided on an “as available” basis.

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation
  • we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses
  • we are not responsible for how schools or organisations use the platform
  • we are not responsible for user-generated content uploaded by third parties

Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded.

14. Privacy & Data Protection

Our use of personal data is governed by our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.

Schools and organisations using the platform may act as independent data controllers for the content they upload.

15. Accessibility

We are committed to improving accessibility and inclusive access across the platform.

16. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time.

Updated versions will be published on the platform.

Continued use of the platform constitutes acceptance of updated Terms.

17. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
